So what happened?
On April Fool's Day, we had planned to release Guess The Game GPT, a special AI built using the OpenAI ChatGPT-4-Turbo model. We had spent the last several weeks preparing, using their new Assistant API, as in our testing, we found that this delivered the best results.
On Friday, March 29th, we released the puzzle without any issue and expected the number of people playing to start to ramp up over the weekend.
On Sunday, March 31st, we noticed that we had already far exceeded our estimated budget of $1,500, as well as our expected number of players. Thanks to some quick fixes, we decided to switch away from the Assistant API (and still had decent results), increased our budget size, added more credits, and slowed down the response time just a bit so we would not hit the rate limits on the OpenAI API.
Sunday night, Pacific time, everything seemed to be working well, and we were looking forward to having everyone play tomorrow's game.
Sometime around Monday morning, Pacific time, we again ran out of credits but had auto-refill enabled. It seems between the hours of 3-7 AM PST, we were able to successfully refill our credit about 4 times.
At 8:00am PST we noticed that we had run out of credits again and the auto-refill had not worked. We quickly attempted to add more credits however found that our credit card was declined. We then attempted over the next several hours to try different browsers, credit cards, IP addresses and finally came to the conclusion that our account must have a lock of some sort on it as we were able to verify that using the same credit card on a different account worked.
We quickly replaced the AI puzzle with one of our normal puzzles, but obviously, for several hours, many users had issues with the GtG AI.
As of almost 12 hours later, we still are not able to add any funds to our account and have not heard back from OpenAI and expect we won't hear anything back from them for days.

As of 1PM PST we were able to get the model up and running on a finetuned LLaMA-13b model using https://anyscale.com. Unfortuantely due to costs and again rate limits unclear how long we will be able to keep it up.
